When Ulysse Nardin unveiled the Freak to the world in 2001, the watchmaking industry held its breath. This was not just another watch—it was a seismic shock, a manifesto that forever changed the perception of what a luxury timepiece could be. The history of the Freak line is a journey through more than two decades of avant-garde innovation, where each new iteration has served as a laboratory on the wrist.
2001: The Birth of a Legend – The Original Freak
It all began with the vision of Rolf W. Schnyder, the brand’s legendary owner, and the genius of watchmaker Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. They decided to break all the rules. The 2001 Freak was shocking in its simplicity yet unimaginably complex:
- No dial, no hands, no crown: The movement itself, rotating on its own axis, indicated the time. The lower bridge served as the hour hand, while the upper bridge (containing the escapement and balance wheel) acted as the minute hand.
- Revolutionary operation: The time was set by rotating the bezel, and the movement was wound via the caseback.
- Pioneering use of silicon: The Freak was the first watch to use silicon in its escapement (the Dual Ulysse Escapement). This material, resistant to magnetism and temperature variations and requiring no lubrication, ushered in a new era of mechanical precision.
The Freak was not just a watch; it was a declaration that the future of watchmaking lay in bold experimentation.

2005-2007: The Era of Materials – Diamond and Silicon
Ulysse Nardin did not rest on its laurels. The following years were a pursuit of material excellence.
- Freak Diamond Heart (2005): This model was the first to feature escapement components made from synthetic diamond, further reducing friction and increasing durability.
- Freak DIAMonSIL (2007): This was a true breakthrough. Ulysse Nardin patented a technology that fused silicon with diamond. Components made of silicon were coated with a thin layer of synthetic diamond, combining the lightness and elasticity of the former with the incredible hardness of the latter.
2010-2015: Pushing the Boundaries of Complication and Design
After mastering materials, the brand focused on refining the movement and aesthetics.
- Freak Diavolo (2010): A flying tourbillon, which rotated on its own axis once a minute, was added to the rotating carrousel-tourbillon movement. This masterpiece of micromechanics increased the power reserve to over eight days.
- Freak Cruiser (2013): The watch’s design was refined. The characteristic notched bezel became even more pronounced, and the entire movement gained a new, sleeker architecture.
- Freak Lab (2015): Two key innovations were introduced: a shock absorption system and the revolutionary Grinder® automatic winding system. Unlike a traditional rotor, the Grinder® used a frame connected to four pawls, allowing it to capture energy from the slightest wrist movements, making it twice as efficient.

2017-2019: A New Generation – Accessibility and Boldness
The Freak line began to evolve, becoming more accessible and practical without losing its rebellious spirit.
- Freak Vision (2017): The first automatic Freak in regular production, equipped with the Grinder® system. It featured an ultra-light silicon balance wheel and a slimmer case.
- Freak Out (2018): A titanium case was introduced, making the watch lighter and more affordable in what was described as the „democratization” of the legend.
- Freak X (2019): The biggest revolution since the original. For the first time in its history, the Freak X was given a crown for setting the time. A simplified movement, a more compact case, and an even lower price point opened the world of the Freak to a completely new audience.
2022-2023: A Modern Odyssey – The Cosmos and a Return to the Roots
The latest chapters in the story showcase the full extent of the brand’s technological capabilities and pay homage to its heritage.
- Freak S (2022): A true show of force. The movement resembles a spaceship, with two balance wheels inclined at a 20-degree angle and linked by a differential. It is a visual and technical masterpiece that looks like a rocket at takeoff.
- Freak ONE (2023): A watch that has come full circle. The Freak ONE draws the best from the entire history of the line: no crown (like the original), the Grinder® winding system, and an escapement featuring DIAMonSIL technology. In 2023, it won the prestigious Iconic Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), cementing its status as an icon.
