Louis Vuitton and master watchmaker Kari Voutilainen have joined forces in an extraordinary collaboration that eloquently redefines the art of horology by merging technical innovation with artisanal mastery. Announced in early 2025, their creation—the LVKV-02 GMR 6—is the second in Louis Vuitton’s ambitious five-part series partnering with some of the world’s greatest independent watchmakers, underscoring a new era for Louis Vuitton as a serious player in high-end watchmaking.
The LVKV-02 GMR 6 exemplifies a seamless dialogue between two ateliers renowned for their craftsmanship. Kari Voutilainen, a Finnish watchmaker celebrated for his hand-crafted, highly technical, and enduring timepieces, brought his distinct expertise in movement engineering and finishing. His workshop crafted the hand-guilloché gold dial—an intricate four-part construction referencing Louis Vuitton’s iconic Damier motif—using historic 18th-century machinery, requiring four days to complete. The dial’s design further features miniature painting inspired by stained glass windows, realized by La Fabrique des Arts Louis Vuitton, whose artisans applied 28 colors in painstaking handwork demanding more than 30 hours of painting and multiple kiln firings.
Technically, the watch is a GMT with a unique retrograde power reserve indicator, combining practicality and refined complexity. The GMT mechanism’s innovation lies in its ability to adjust the hour hand independently of the GMT disc, a subtle but novel variation on Voutilainen’s previous designs. The movement includes a sophisticated dual escapement wheel system providing direct impulse to the balance, improving timekeeping efficiency and stability, beating at a steady 18,000 vibrations per hour with a 65-hour power reserve

The case itself is a work of art, formed from tantalum with accents in platinum, hand-finished by Louis Vuitton’s La Fabrique du Temps. Each lug is meticulously polished, requiring about an hour apiece, while the casework demands extensive satin finishing. The back features an engraving that reads „Louis cruises with Kari,” symbolizing the spirit of travel that inspires the watch and the broader collaborative series.
Beyond the watch’s technical and aesthetic virtues, the collaboration supports independent watchmaking sustainably: Kari Voutilainen serves on the committee of experts for the Louis Vuitton Watch Prize for Independent Creatives, and proceeds from the project help promote and mentor emerging talents in high watchmaking.
Limited to only five pieces, plus two prototypes, the LVKV-02 GMR 6 is offered at €550,000 and presented in bespoke, hand-painted Louis Vuitton travel trunks that echo the motifs and colors of the watch dial, reinforcing Louis Vuitton’s heritage as a maison of luxury travel.
This partnership marks a momentous chapter—not merely producing a high-end timepiece but crafting a symbol of masterful artistry, ingenuity, and a shared passion for horological tradition and innovation. Louis Vuitton and Kari Voutilainen have thus set a new benchmark for creative collaboration in contemporary watchmaking

Kari Voutilainen, born in 1962 in Lapland, Finland, is one of the most respected independent watchmakers in the world. Now based in Môtiers, Switzerland, Voutilainen is celebrated for his extraordinary craftsmanship, refined aesthetics, and horological innovation.
He trained at the Finnish School of Watchmaking and further specialized at Switzerland’s WOSTEP school in complicated watch restoration. Voutilainen honed his skills at Parmigiani Mesure et Art du Temps under the guidance of master restorer Charles Meylan before teaching at WOSTEP.
In 2002, he founded his own atelier, pursuing a vision of producing exceptional, handcrafted timepieces in very limited numbers—around 50 per year. His creations are distinguished by traditional hand-finishing, hand-guilloché dials, and technical breakthroughs, such as the decimal repeater and the proprietary Caliber 28 with a double-wheel escapement.
Voutilainen has also proven to be an astute entrepreneur, integrating in-house manufacturing and acquiring a dial factory to ensure full quality control. In 2021, he further cemented his influence in the industry by acquiring the historic brand Urban Jürgensen.
Combining artistry, innovation, and business acumen, Kari Voutilainen has become a central figure in modern haute horlogerie, preserving and advancing the tradition of fine watchmaking.
